Busting Common Myths About Ai

Busting Common Myths About Ai

AI or artificial intelligence. This is the term that makes people very uneasy because all of a sudden cars are driving themselves, and all of a sudden many jobs become obsolete because AI is taking over. And this means before people know it, the world will be run by robots, right? Well, yes and no. There are many myths that have been created about AI out of fear which need to be busted right now. Let’s go talk a little more about these myths:

Myth 1: Superintelligence Is Guaranteed To Happen By 2100

Fact: AI experts want to make this clear is that those assumptions cannot be made because it is not known. Yes, AI is becoming more and more prevalent but it does not mean it is known when it will take over. It may happen in decades or it may happen in centuries to come. Or, it may never happen at all. The fact regarding this myth is that when superintelligence is guaranteed to happen is unknown.

And in fact, this myth is not a new myth. Back decades ago it was believed that by the year 2000 there would only be flying cars and robots controlling everything. However, just recently the flying car business was just established and it is a long way off from this being the norm. That means flying cars will not be the norm even 20 years after the predicted year it was believed to become the norm. In other words, no one can ever know how fast technology will really evolve and what is resulted from it.

Myth 2: Only People Who Are Not Educated Worry About Ai

Fact: Actually, the truth is that many AI experts and top researchers are concerned about AI as well. With the prevalence of AI, experts and researchers want to make sure that it is done right and those people are educated about the risks but also to convey the message to others to not lose sleep over it.

Myth 3: Ai Is Turning Evil

Fact: AI is not at all turning evil. In fact, AI is helping people in all kinds of ways. Halfcode is one AI startup that’s using AI to help people suffer from visual impairment and hearing loss. The objective of AI is that it becomes competent and can be a useful tool when used properly. The concern about AI is that it can become misaligned with what we are wanting to see out of it. The only way to reduce the risk of that happening is that it is better controlled when it is being developed and as it keeps evolving.

Myth 4: Robots Are A Major Concern

Fact: Robots are not the biggest concern. The biggest concern is intelligence that is misaligned which has been brought up in the point above. Robots also don’t need to have a body, all that is needed is an internet connection and that is it.

Myth 5: Superintelligence Is Dangerous

Fact: Superintelligence that is not well planned out and controlled can easily be dangerous. However, the key is to plan it well and ahead so the risks that come with it are minimized. This means before any aspect of AI becomes mainstream, it needs to be tested, tweaked, and changed over and over again which means it will take years or even decades to do.

Those are the most common myths of AI that needed to be busted and as soon as more myths are created regarding superintelligence – then the facts just have to keep busting those myths. Because as technology keeps evolving and as AI keeps evolving, more and more of these misconceptions will emerge which will only create fear among the general population. AI is really meant to make life more convenient but it needs a lot of planning ahead and work for it to serve its purpose.
